Hi Judy
Actually I'm trying to shed those pesty expounds but here is why I use wet newspaper. I used it to line the hole we dug so that the liner didn't touch rock and dirt when we lined the hole. It's like an insulating layer between the plastic and the earth.

Check the pumps first is my advice. I had a persistent leak and it turned
out to be the pumps were loaded with algae causing my bio box to overflow.
Did your mother line the hole with wet newspaper before putting the
plasticliner in?
