I don't know about the mechanics of it, but we had central
air-conditioning installed about three years ago - after using
room air-contditioners for all those years - for under $2,000.
Maybe our house is smaller or our attic was easier of access -
I don't know. But it wasn't that expensive, and we wished we
had had it done years ago. It really makes life easier - just
humidity control is worth it.

I've been looking into mini-duct A/C as a cheaper option. Since I have
radiant heat in the house there's no ductwork in the walls (well, there is,
but it's not useable -- long story). Mini-duct uses small hoses that can
be fished between the wall studs, so there's a lot less work involved.
The cost could be as low as half ($6000).
