I was at the health food store yesterday, and there were lots of "-dolphilus" products. I'm sure they were all meant to calm the tummy.

That is very interesting. I wonder if it helps people with stuff like acid reflux. Which would be me.

Nope- it is over the counter. Thankfully the pharmaceutical industry hasn't caught on to this one yet, so it is still reasonable affordable to buy! I actually found out about it through desperation and asking a person in the supplements section of the Co-op after the last bout of food poisoning a couple of years ago. At that point the Drs had tested me for everything imaginable, tried multiple meds, and sent me to a specialist. Nothing showed up and nothing helped. So,..... I had nothing to lose. I swore it was the placebo effect for the first 6 months I took it, until I realized that I hadn't been violently ill or had food poisoning for those 6 months (something that was a monthly occurance prior). At that point, I realized that the stuff really did help and I've taken it ever since. If I miss one day, it is still OK. I can tell if I miss 2 days- so I make of point of taking it consistently. Oh, and when on antibiotics- like when I had surgery last month- I take lots of extra doses. Significantly decreases the GI side effects from antibiotics for me.

is this an over the counter or something I have to talk a doctor into giving me?

Sent this just to Pam initially- but since more of you want to know- am forwarding it to the list as an OT post.

I got incredibly ill about 4 years ago on a trip to Belize (we took an emergency flight home). No one ever figures out what was wrong, but my digestive system was never the same again. about 2 years ago now, I started taking a probiotic called Powerdophilus everyday. It has completely changed my eating and comfort! And I noticed a difference after about a month. Also, I hardly ever use antiacids- if my tummy is a little unsettled, I just take another Powerdophilus and about 40 minutes later I feel better. I also take extra if I know I've eaten something that might bother me. Amazing! I used to constantly have stomach pain, and now I don't really even notice my stomach!
