Sue, if you eat eggs - save the shells (peel the membrane out) and grind
them up and mix in the soil under the mulch around your peppers and
tomatoes. Prevents blossom end rot. Works great and it's free. You can
buy liquid calcium but this is more economical! Thus speaks the woman w/
the 269 dollar water bill. I have to be thrifty to afford my garden.

Sadly I have lots of experience with this. You can still eat them, just
cut
off the bad part with a good bit of extra to make sure you don't get nasty
stuff. One problem is that the BER is not good for the tomato (obviously)
and so they can start turning red a lot earlier than they would
normally...I'm sure there's a name for this condition...but anyway you can
get a red tomato that's not actually ripe.

I noticed that two of my Roma's are almost ripe. Unfortunately I noticed
they also have BER. Rats!! With the weird weather we've been having this
year it's been hard to get the watering even, especially with the regular
torrential rains we keep getting. Are tomatoes with BER edible still? Can
you cut off the end or is it best to just toss the whole thing?

Sue
