Here's some more trivia. Linnaeus named the genus, Moraea, for his
father-in-law, Johan Moraeus. And while I couldn't find a definition
for "gigandra," definitions for other giga+ words were either
indicators of large flowers or, more likely in this instance, I
think, long stems.

Beautiful flower! Could not let "grootflappie" pass by without a
try at finding its meaning -- assume the word is Afrikaans / Dutch,
and "groot" means great or big; "flappie" a bit more problematic
but found an on-line dictionary which gave back the translation
"flounce" (or ruffle) for "flap" in Dutch..... ???

Quite attractive, isn't it.

Wonder what language that originated in, and what it really
means??

I had looked up African Iris and the genus Moraea was the only
thing that came up - that's why I asked. I know nothing about
Moraea, Dietes, or anything else it might be.
Dietes came up with the names:
BUTTERFLY FLAG, YELLOW WILD IRIS, PEACOCK FLOWER, UINTJIE,
POUBLOM, WEDDING FLOWER, WEDDING IRIS
Various Moraea use the names:
PEACOCK LILY, AFRICAN IRIS, BUTTERFLY IRIS, GROOTFLAPPIE,
BRUINUINTJIE
Both in Iris family, must have similaritiesI would guess.

the pics I could find online- but it might be??

African Iris bloom!
Hi all- the seeds that Island Jim sent me some time ago have
grown very
nicely. Now I have a lovely new flower in my garden! Jim, do
you know
the botanical name for this lovely plant? Thank you!
