Re: help with tiger lilly identification

Steve, true Tiger Lilies are Lilium lancifolium. Hemerocallis fulva is the Tawny Daylily. But I too, grew up calling them tiger lilies. A friend of mine who hybridizes daylilies and has a 5 acre farm of them insists the background of this daylily is a lot fuzzier than that. I don't really have an answer for you but I will try to forward your question to her and see if she replies.

Subject: [CHAT] help with tiger lilly identification

Hello all,
I am wondering about Tiger Lillies.I am new to working with lillies and would appreciate any help.
Now I have what seems to be a very prolific orange tiger lilly.
For years I though that the plants were sterile and certainly won't self fertilize. I guess they have an inhibitor that prevents self fertilization similar to irises.

at any rate, I ran down to my neighbors garden and grabbed some pollen
from a yellow lilly that had similar features to my tiger lillies.

the smae shaped flowers and long grass-like leaves or foliage.

I am just trying to straighten out a couple of things.
I read recently that these orange tiger lillies are pod sterile. If
that's the case, then mother nature goofed with five nicely developing
pods on my tiger lillies.

I am guessing that I have incorrectly identified the variety I have in my yard.

 Hemerocallis fulva

I am positive this is the "tiger lilly" (which isn't a true lilly) growing in my yard.

if this is the case, what yellow variety did I acquire pollen from. Or
can the Lillium sp. and Hemerocallis sp. succesfully cross?

thanks so much for any help.
