If you now have internet access, I highly recommend Firefox. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox 
I'm running 3.0.11 and it's been rock solid for me.
It doesn't have a lot of extraneous garbage to clutter it up. You can download various add-ons to do what you need.
There's a newer version out, but I haven't tried it, so don't have an opinion yet. It's supposed to be faster.

With a little right-clicking I found an option to reset IE to the factory installed settings which I expected to be IE6. It warned against doing this because I'd lose all sorts of settings and it couldn't be reversed. However, it did say to use this option if your browser becomes inoperable. I hadn't been able to use it since yesterday through numerous restarts.
The reset seems to have worked, although rather than going back to IE6, I still have IE8. But at least I am online. I have a couple of items selling on ebay today so I need access. Time to go looking for another browser. I noticed I have Netscape setup.exe, created Jan 2006 on my computer. Would that be a good one to use?

Jim's suggestion looks imperative but impossible now.
IE8 doesn't "respond".  My internet connection is obviously fine as I am
getting new emails.  But when I try to get on the internet, I get nada.
C+A+D gets me "this program is not responding". Does anyone know how I can dump IE8 and go back to IE7, if it is still somewhere on my computer? If I 
can't get on the internet, how could I get a new browser?

Because I am genetically paranoid, and knowing that Greedy Billy wants

Obviously this can't be right.  So I scroll and scroll until I'm
past the sponsored links and THERE they are.  I cannot immediately
see my results until I first look at what goolge and it's sponsors
have to offer.

Why does everyone want to slap another toolbar on my screen? I
currently have NINE available of which I allow 4 to show and that
takes up 20% of my screen as it is with small icons.

Grrrr
