Nothing fancy this time, Bonnie. Just plain old 16-inch diameter terra cotta. That's almost the largest you can get without spending big bucks. Once they outgrow a 16-inch pot, they either go into the ground or into the trash.

I've tried filing my "good" shovel every winter and it really does help. I
think I'll start polishing the shovel too. Bill waxed his planer down and
the wood just slides freely with no hesitation as it heads for the blade.
Before, the wood hung up, bogged every time. I'm thinking if it works for
his planer, why wouldn't a sharp, waxed shovel slide more easily through
hardened clay? Now I just need to find time to hone it down and wax it at
the end of spring and summer, too and I wouldn't have to keep my pruners
with me when I go to plant something near tree roots.

in the midday sun. That was today. We started out rejuvenating our
pineapple patch at about 7:00 AM. I got stabbed three or four times and
bled all over myself and the plants [cashier at Home Depot later
offered first aid of alcohol and band-aids].

Yard guy and his wife, the lovely Juanita, showed up about 9:00.
Remember the yucca that broke the pot? I asked yard guy to help me
plant it [after he had mowed, weed eaten, sprayed for scale, treated
for fire ants, and trimmed out the queen sago]. He did it all. He dug a
suitable hole amongst slash pine roots in about three minutes. Turns
out he hones his shovel--it's as sharp as a razor--and he cut through
those pine roots like they didn't exist.

Yard guy was out of here by 11:00. And Ms. Fatma and I started
re-potting and planting stuff without assistance or, apparently, any
sort of plan. We ended up going to Home Depot FOUR blinking times for
pots and such [on one of those times the short one bought a Fiskars
bypass for less than $10.00]. The last time we went, Ms. Fatma said: "I
wish we had false mustaches."

Also during the day, we managed to harvest the first three ripe mangos
from one of our trees, pick a dozen or so figs, and eat a couple of
handsful of Jamaican cherries.

But the heat index was 105 to 110 during most of this and we are
exhausted.
