Don't know about hummingbird feeders, but I keep ants out of my irrigation timer [carpenter ants love to nest in it] by misting around it with boric acid. Bought 4 oz of boric acid powder at the drug store for a couple of dollars; when mixed for misting, that's a 3 or 4 year supply. Oh, yeah, hand-held misting bottle was another dollar.
