Jesse,  there was an article in the Des Moines paper yesterday about a days 
old trumpeter swan (Fred) that was nearly stoned to death but expected to 
return to his nest next week.  3 of Fred's 5 siblings were not so lucky.  Stones 
thrown by vandals killed 3 of the cygnet's siblings & nearly killed Fred. 
Teenagers were seen lobbing stones at Fred's nest.  Fred & his 5 siblings followed 
their parents into the water for protection. 2 of the young swans drowned as 
they were unable to swim for long periods because their feathers were not yet 
waterproof.  2 cygnets were found floating lifelessly in the lake. Fred was on 
the nest unresponsive next to a sibling who died a few hrs later.  He was 
treated with heating pads & intravenous protein.  A $2000 reward is offered for 
information leading to an arrest.  The picture of Fred looks like your first
