Bonnie, they work 3 yrs out usually however they will sometimes come out for
something that is coming up sooner. They took such a wide variety of photos
I am not sure what articles they will be included with but I believe
containers will surely be included. With a few exceptions, they do not feature a
garden but use the photos for different subjects featured. Garden Gate is a
great mag if you do not like ads. They have none. The company, August Home
Publishing, is an interesting entity. It is owned by a single person and to see
him you would never guess his profession. His original mag was and is
'Woodsmith' but also does 'Cuisine', 'Workbench', 'ShopNotes' and owns a fine
woodworking store with top of the line equipment, woods, instruction, the most
knowledgeable employees and everything that goes along with woodworking. At the
store they also have a garden section, garden center and the best garden book
selection around. The home office is in the heart of Des Moines and just a few
blocks from Meredith Publishing. It is at that site where the items were
stolen. This is also where they throw a big bash each Sept in the garden for
those who have worked for & with them. We are always invited.
Marcia, the corporate gardener has the most interesting job. She takes
care of the gardens at the home office and the test gardens which are located
away from the h.o. At the test gardens she is testing plants, prepares
gardens for upcoming articles which may include starting plants from seeds in the
greenhouse, planting & caring for them to maturity and many times will be plants
used in the cooking of something for the Cuisine mag. She was a nurse with
a love of gardening and is one of the most interesting gardeners. Her love
of plants is so evident.
The gardens are behind the old mansion and in front of the carriage
house and is terraced. You may see a picture of the office and information on
Don the owner.
