One of the (many!) papers my Dad had to sign was that he would not take a
taxi or bus home. Driving was ruled out, too.

I remember someone telling me they had a situation like that (no one to
take them) and the hospital refused to do the procedure.  Eventually she
rescheduled and just lied that a friend was coming at the approximate time
the surgery was scheduled to be done.  She then took a taxi home.
