Don't recant just yet. Lots of plants have leaves and flowers that change color as they mature. Is the green very dark and sort of infused with purple? The color could yet darken as the season progresses. Sometimes the amount of sun it gets will render it more or less green.

I have one that I have moved around the place about 4 times trying to find
the perfect place for it. Last year I moved it to a mostly sun spot and it 
is doing beautifully.  It bloomed and is holding its color.
I do have to recount my statement on my Black Lace Sawbucks holding its
color.  Last night I was out walking the gardens and noticed that my black
lace is now a green lace. I am sorry for telling you it stayed dark purple, but I still love it. It was blooming more than I think it ever has too. I 
love the lacy look of the leaves.

Well, somehow I can't help but think you Zone 9 people deserve that ;+)
All those pics we see of things growing in your gardens that we can't grow 
up here in Zone 5.  Now you can covet our Ninebarks!

I have mine planted on the shady side of a red bud tree.  I has
suckered
about 3 feet around it.  I love the little grove it has made
though.  I did
move one to the back yard under a yew shrub that is over 30 years
old and
limbed up.  It is keeping its very dark purple color.
It bloomed some this year but no where as much as my variegated
sambucus.
It is in a lot more sun from the west.  Beautiful!

Just how much suckering is yours doing? Is it staying right next
to the
plant or all over? How long have you had it? Is it keeping it's
dark
leaves or do you find the species showing up in it?


I had thought about buying this last year. Read somewhere that
if not in
the right conditions it would be more dark green rather than the
black/purple... also that it might end up running thru a large
area.

We went nursery hopping this morning. We wanted to get some
vegetable
plants--peppers, eggplants, a cherry tomato--and see if there
were any
field-grown pansies left [nope]. We also wanted to kinda look
around
for
ideas. Three junipers have died in one of the street-side
beds and
we're
having a line of five incense cedars along the back fence
limbed up on
Monday, so we've got some interesting areas to think about. So,
mostly,
we were just window shopping.

We saw a black elderberry [Sambucus nigra "Eva," which is
definitely
on
our list to consider planting somewhere].

On the way home, we took a detour and went by Schreiner's iris
nursery.
It's mind blowing. They have a few acres of demonstration
gardens
where
one can wander, picnic, photograph, whatever. Mainly, of
course, it's
a
show case for their irises, but the beds are chock-a- block
flowers--irises, lupines, columbines, poppies, herbaceous
peonies,
delphiniums, alliums... masses of spectacular color every
where you
looked. And, of course, I hadn't brought my camera.
