Auralie - no laughing here. Lots of alternatives to try out there. Back in the 80s my dad ate liver every day for lunch and it completely stopped his arthritis (though in his case it just might have been the power of suggestion) He did this for several years (Ugh!) When he stopped, the arthritis eventually came back.
With animals, placebo doesn't come into play. It works or doesn't. I had a German Shepherd with hip displasia. We fed him alfalfa to reduce the affects, but what really helped him was the acupuncture. Found this: A placebo-controlled study involving 300 people that compared copper bracelets to bracelets painted to look copper had a surprising outcome. A significant number of subjects who wore the copper bracelets said they obtained relief. The copper bracelets lost weight which could theoretically mean copper was absorbed by the wearer.

You girls can laugh at me if you want, but I feel I must ask Do you wear a copper bracelet? On our honeymoon in 1952 we had a minor automobile accident - ran into a mailbox post. I was sitting with my legs crossed under me yoga-fashion - no one had even heard of seatbelts in those days - and slammed into the dashboard with both knees. Both knees swelled and were very painful - were x-rayed and shown not to be broken, but the doctor said I could be sure to have arthritis in the future. Sure enough within the next five years my knees were so painful I could hardly walk. One doctor said it was not necessary to have x-rays - he could just feel the crepitation with his hands. I'm not sure just who got me started, but I started wearing a copper bracelet that Chet had given me before we were married, and another for the other arm that I had picked up in a craft shop. To make a long story short, I am still trotting around pretty well fifty years later. I can't claim that my knees don't hurt, mostly at night, but it seems more connected to a degenerated disk than arthritis. Another interesting fact is that twice I have had falls, unrelated, but both times the copper turned bright green with corrosion by the next day. Some doctors look at my bracelets and laugh, but others look at my hands and say "well, you have no deformation in your hands, so they obviously don't cause any harm." I know two other people near my age who wear them and swear by them. I know it seems improbable, but they are not expensive, so why don't you give the bracelets a try. I have had numerous ones over the years - some have been lost, some I have given away, and a couple have just broken. The ones I find most comfortable are just flat bands, but I have had a couple of very pretty ones I picked up in the Southwest in Indian craft shops. Laugh if you want to, but I hope maybe this will help. An injectable form worked quite well for her for a couple of years. (This was a sub-cu, not into the joint injection. ) The vet said that some studies had shown that the glucosamine tabs were mostly broken down in the gut so didn't get to the joint, but that the injectable form bypassed that. I hear you about the stairs. I not only squeak, but sound like Rice Krispies. If you're having pain, ask your doctor about the Synvisc or Supartz. Neither are related to glucosamine. My doctor prefers the Supartz - says it has a better carrier, if I remembercorrectly. I've also been told that if you use it before your knees get as bad as mine that there are better results because it helps to prevent more damage by cushioning it.I had to give up hiking in my 40's. I remember getting off the plane aftersome day-hiking in the Tetons, and my knees were so bad that I not only couldn't stand the extra weight of my camera bag, I had to support myself on each seatback as I walked by. I got to the terminal and needed wheeled help. d----- Original Message ----- From: "Johnson, Cyndi D Civ USAF AFMC 95 CS/SCOSI"<cyndi.johnson@edwards.af.mil> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Monday, June 01, 2009 10:45 AM Subject: Joints (was RE: [CHAT] rough month)I'm getting pretty creaky in the knees too. I stopped taking the stairs a couple years ago because I could hear the grinding noise from my knee in the quiet stairwell and it made me cringe. Didn't hurt but I couldn't stand to listen. Now I'm getting pain occasionally while I hike and I am very careful about squatting down or jumping off my horse. I guess that glucosamine stuff doesn't really work; I gave it to my dog for years and I thought it helped her but I've read a lot of studies since then that say it's mostly a placebo.
