I called HCG, explained everything. he thought my cultivation was fine. He said they'd had no other reports on this plant.

Well, I dug it up. Re Daryl's mention of soil moisture, that aspect seemed 
ideal.  It wasn't wet, wasn't dry - seemed just right. Mulch was only
perhaps a half in thick.
Roots were nice and white, nothing appeared rotted.  The base is solid and
woody.
I had planted a dwarf Amsonia next to it at the same time last year and it
is doing beautifully.
I potted what is left of it up; removed all the dying material. We'll wait
and see.
Gosh, I wanna order another one really bad.

Based on  the pictures... it's gonna die if you don't do something.
If it were mine, I would dig it up, wash all the dirt off the roots, repot 
it
in a pot with fresh good soil, if I didn't see what was causing this by
digging it up and looking at the roots. (maybe some critter is eating the
root
shoots?)  I would also get my joy dishsoap out, deluted with water, and
spray
the heck out of it and leave it in the shade for a few hours, then rinse
it
off....

Sometime I have success doing this, sometimes it kills it within 24
hours....

other thoughts-   Have you fertilized in that area and it got too much
recently? Definately looks like something soil/root issue as it is dieing 
from the ground up.....or maybe it is too wet of an area?

I am sure someone else will have a better suggestion than me....

Did you ever have issues with Verticillium Wilt near where this is
planted?
Although this is more of a tree/shrub issue, according to Kemper, it
lists
this for that plant.

Feel lucky you enjoyed it for 2 seasons. A few years ago a garden center 
around here was selling a similair one claiming to be hardy.  I didn't

it, but the sale was on so I tried it.  Didn't over winter for me.

I ordered zone 5 hardy varieties of Antirrhinum, Mirabilis, and
Pelargonium
last year from HCG, not sure I believed their promises.  The Pel just

didn't
feel at home, limped along, and gave up. The Mirabilis had a weak start, 
survived, no flowers, but managed.  It came back hale and hearty this
year,

I am hoping for flowers.

But it was the hardy snap, 'Dulcinea's Heart', that blew me away.  She
bloomed, never stopping, from May until October.  On New Year's she was

still

green.  By spring, the thick crown was battered and brown, but she put

forth

new growth quickly when the weather warmed.  She is covered in blooms!
But
she's withering fast recently. Her leaves droop and she is dying quickly 
now.  It's so sad.  I don't think she'll last much longer.

Anyone have any idea what could be happening?
