Dear All:  Apologies for my very brief reply the other day...wanted to say Hi! but had so much to do.  It is so wonderful to hear from all of you again...I cannot tell you how many times I think of this group with fondness and affection.  The gardens I started at my house nearly 20 years ago have gotten quite messy over the past 2 years...summer and fall of 2015 was spent getting Marty through surgeries and radiation treatment for metastatic tonsil cancer...and much of 2016 was spent getting him through the after effects, including months of a feeding tube and a couple of stays in the intensive care units trying to figure out why he kept passing out from extremely low blood pressures.  We have known for many years that he had a stenotic aortic valve in his heart that would eventually need replacing and initially the doctors thought maybe that had gotten significantly worse.  It had, but not to the point of needing surgery then.  Turned out the radiation therapy had completely knocked out his thyroid function and he was profoundly hypothyroid. Fortunately, Synthroid is a cheap and easy fix for that. It was all we could manage to get the fruit trees picked and canned over the spring and fall, keep a few of the front gardens tidy, and keep the lawn mowed...And now that he is pretty much recovered from his cancer and treatments, his stenosis in his heart valve has worsened to the point that he is scheduled for open heart surgery the first part of July...so we are going to have another awesome summer here!  LOL!  Spring of 2015 we went to Rome...spring of 2016 we went to Maui (where Marty ended up in the hospital briefly there as well).  We are planning to head back to Italy in fall of 2018 with some friends.  Obviously, we are enjoying being empty nesters!  All three of our children are now grown and in stable long term relationships.  Our granddaughter Sophie is 9 1/2 now and the absolute joy of my life...she loves to help me and Marty in the garden.  Our son Mark moved to Phoenix shortly after he graduated college but misses the Midwest and he and his girlfriend are moving to  Madison WI end of June.  We flew out to Phoenix to spend Thanksgiving with them and I think I spent an hour hugging him...I had not seen him since May.  It will be great to have them within easy driving distance.  Both of our daughters are working at the same hospital I work at, as nursing assistants.  Meghan is in Adult Bone Marrow Transplant and Morgan is in General Pediatrics.  Both are working towards nursing school.  I have decided to go back to school and am going to start by doing a non-degree graduate certificate program in Public Health.  If that goes well, I will pursue a Master's.  If not, then I still will have a CPH (certificate in public health).  Cherries are within about 2 weeks of needing to be harvested and canned...right around the time we are going on vacation to Michigan with Meghan's family...and 2 days after we get back from there, Marty's surgery is scheduled.  Thinking I may just pick and pit the cherries then freeze them all until it's convenient to can them.  I really must get some work done, today...I now work in newborn screening triaging abnormal newborn screen results to primary care providers and intensive care units.  It is life saving work and I love it...I love knowing that I helped to save a babies life or keep them from being permanently impaired.  It is deeply satisfying work and I can't imagine doing anything else right now.  Sorry to be so long winded...it's been a busy few years.  :-)  Melody Hills, IA Zone 5A.

My granddaughter and I did. Interesting indeed. I've connected with a cousin who never knew her dad (My great uncle's granddaughter) and another probable cousin searching for her parent's birth family, who doesn't know any surnames.
Going to get hot here today, 95F, then back down to cooler temps by the weekend.

HI Jesse,

Don’t be sorry – if it hadn’t happened I never would have heard from you! I think you, Donna, and Tricia, must be related – all that energy! Speaking of related, I just did the Ancestry DNA test.  Has anyone else ever done that?

Hi Kitty...and everybody! Sorry about the fake e-mail. I certainly didn't do it. Good to hear from you all!

I've been working in my gardens a lot lately, it's good for my soul. I thought we're supposed to slow down when we get older? This is not happening for me! I'm busier than I've ever been! I now manage my mother's 24 rental units, have a full time job, a farm and an Etsy shop where I try to squeeze out art e dry now and then!

Re Saruma,

I found this quite interesting…the part about the anagram…

This plant is somewhat similar in foliage appearance to the wild gingers (Asarum) native to North America, Europe and Asia (Saruma is an anagram of Asarum), but differs by being slightly larger, more upright and bearing showy unconcealed flowers.”

Auralie,

Has it multiplied well for you?

That's it!  Thank you so much. It is a most satisfactory plant for me - don't know why

I couldn't remember the name - old age I guess.

Chris, I sometimes miss your postings because of your reverse format. So I didn't see this at first. I knew my mention of Stylophorum couldn't be right (leaves wrong) but I just took  a stab at it.
The Saruma looks lovely; I can see why Auralie likes it. I'd like to try it myself sometime, though at his point, can't. I lost almost all of my shade last fall and I'm scrambling to protect what I have.

Hi Auralie,

I'm sorry about your hip!  I hope things get better for you and that teenager shows up.

Could it be Saruma henryi?

If so, I'm jealous.  I tried growing it here, but it never seemed to thrive.  I could never get more than a couple of years out of a plant.
