Well, Pam, there are a lot of folks out and about who are two bricks
shy of a load and you wonder how they manage to get up; get through
the day and back to bed at night in one piece.
But, when it comes to developers, there is another factor at play.
MONEY. Developers build to make money...period. They have no taste;
they do not care what they do to the environment nor what the end
product looks like (nor what the quality is - it will be as low as
they can get away with; no matter how expensive the house). They
want to put the maximum number of units on any given piece of ground;
get them up as fast as possible, sell them as fast as possible; get
out and go on to the next lot.
When a developer gets hands on some ground and hires a civil engineer
or land planner to lay out the development, they don't pay one bit of
attention to what the ground actually does in three dimensions nor
what's on it - unless it's wetland or something else they have to
deal with - they just lay out the maximum number of lots that can be
legally crammed on it. Developments with 'common space' got that
because it wasn't buildable for some reason OR because with it the
developer could increase the density on the rest of the property.
It's all about $$$$.
Buyers of what they produce are also governed more by money than
taste...they want the most house they can get for the least amount of
money. In some cases, it's simply that they can actually afford one
of the ticky-tacky houses and could not get a loan to buy anything
better.
I have maintained for several years that people who buy some of the
tract mansions around here have to sign a paper that states "I am
totally tasteless" before they can even go in to look at the house;
the builders have to do the same before they can file for a permit.
It's a vast, tasteless conspiracy out there:-)
