Thanks Scottie- you just made my quest for research that much easier! I'm in northern CA, but these are great starting places for me.

Theresa, I've forgotten where in California you are, but the folks at The Orchid Connection in San Diego specialize in easy, outdoor species. http://www.orchidconnection.com/intro.htm Also, the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate http://www.sborchid.com/index.php specializes in "outdoor temperature tolerant varieties". There is also a book, The Wild Orchids of California by R. A. Coleman that might be helpful. If it isn't in your public library, check the AOS website for the local orchid society; most maintain a library as well as many local growers who can tell you what will grow in your area. And there is always the California Orchid Society, http://www.orchidsocietyofcalifornia.com/ where there is lots of information.
