Actually, it may be the heat, if they are from mountainous areas. It is probably used to cooler summers than Florida can provide. Moisture may also factor in....

Well, to be fair, some dwarf dahlias do have stems long enough for floral
arrangements - shortshort arrangements. From another view of this, I have
grown the ones they requested and 2 of the 3 colors don't perform as well as
the third color, stems 4 inches at most. That third one - the purple - grew
like gangbusters and if you forget to pinch, yes, you'll have 12 inch stems
on 3 foot plants, more to the size of the arrangements this group makes.
They don't do the short foam brick table decorations. Mainly just vase
combos which don't handle 4 inch stems.

Hey. I like dwarf dahlias. Just wish they'd grow here [kinda odd that a
native of Mexico won't thrive in south Florida]. As I recall from my
daze in SoCal, after 2 or 3 years, they did produce stems long enough
for cutting. And the colors rival all others for variety and vibrance.

Another thing I have trouble with is the cutting garden spending
$50-60 on
low growing border dahlias. Not so much because they are too short to
use
in arrangements (I've gotten used to that even if I don't like it), but
because they refuse to dig them in the fall. what a waste.
