Our neighbor to the back had a bamboo that spread terribly and killed off my
border of flowering shrubs.  Then she rented a bulldozer and tried to dig it out -
took most of two summers before she gave up and had  someone come in and
dig up the whole area. 
On the other hand, I have had a nice, clumping bamboo - grows about eight feet
high - and it has done very nicely om a spot on a hilly knoll for the past 40 years
or so - came from the grounds of the old St. Peter's School (now long gone) in
Peekskill, NY.
I have a few snowdrops blooming, and a couple of early daffs that got crushed
by last week's snow.  I hope that when the snow is gone - still about a foot on
the beds, etc. - that my Hellebores which were so lovely before the snow will
manage to revive a bit. 
At least the goldfinches are now showing bright yellow feathers on their shoulders
and backs.  That's a sure sign of spring for me.

Yep. Absolutely. There is a specialty bamboo grower locally ( who knew??) that I found when researching this new project.  So I have some ideas and will quiz him extensively when I go to the plant sale he is attending at a local garden tomorrow.

P.S.  It is really nice to know you are all still out there.  I did some hunting and there is a specialty bamboo grower in Roseville not too far away from here.  Sent him an email asking about this site I need to fill to see if any variety of bamboo might fit there....

Oleanders would do, you'd want the dwarf varieties or you'd be pruning too often. Salvia greggii and rosemary also good. Spanish lavender will take those conditions too. How tall do you want your plants?
here in AZ I see a lot of lantana, caesalpinia, euphorbia, spineless opuntia, aloes, and agaves in public places.
