Re: Hummingbird is back!

Hi Donna

Yes, they do but that is a practice, that while immediately tranquil and lovely, is not healthy for them in the long run so I try and disuade them. Here at home though I have a couple that hang out all year. My albutilons bloom most of the year and they tend to like them.

On a sour gardening note I finally pulled the plug on my Melianthus major or Honey Bush. Very tropical looking with palmated (sp) large tropical looking leaves and huge magenta flower spikes in the spring it was a nice touch to the garden. However, it was the worst white fly magnet I've ever seen. From trunk to leaf was black with the white fly honey dew...ie. black sooty mold. It was infecting all the rest of the plants around it including my dinasaur food which if you have ever seen it you wouldn't think would have a w.f. issue. Not exactly soft tissue to suck on. Anyway, I'm hoping that by removing the host plant I won't have to use chemicals. I like my hummers too much. Of course the w.f. might have been why I had the hummers all year!
