Yes, Jim that advice came from the Canadian Bruin Society. In a rare display of unanamous consensus both black and brown bears voted overwhelmingly in favor of fish oil over deet!

I recently read of advice to those planning a trip into
Canada, where the blackflies and mosquitos are equally bad.
It was to ingest two capsules daily (and during the trip) of
fish oil or only slightly purified cod-liver oil. Apparently this
regime provides the skin with a slightly fishy aroma which is
repellent to mosquitos (and, one presumes, to one's loved ones...).
