We had them forever when I was a child. They never filled up any of the ponds or swamps we fished in. Maybe they are just bad for onramental ponds. They are not at all invasive around here.

Not sure anyone addressed the cattails! Mother nature uses them to level
out the earth? When they establish they catch and drop all debris possible
to fill in the waters and continue to do so while they spread to continue
their mission. Lovely for dry dry arrangements - bad for ponds!
