Even here in the desert we get cattails in places that are wet during the
winter, like retention basins. Ponds here are mostly man-made and no one is
going to let them get filled in, so the cattails have to be dredged out
every couple years.
Even my own little pond at home in a stock tank gets overgrown with cattails
if I'm not careful.

They aren't too bad in big ponds here, but in drainage ditches, smaller
water areas, etc they do tend to become an issue. I'd never thought about
them being a problem until I saw a pond filled in as Donna described. Kinda
stinks as I really like them.
