He's not alone in this job market. I listened to a progam on this the other night. One fellow said he does volunteer work, just to keep his skills sharp & his name out there. Also helped his self esteem. He contacted some charities & they had several things he was able to help them with.
Ed had a long lay off a few years before he was disabled, 6 months if I remember correctly. The first few months were bad, but when the plant finally started up again, he wished he could stay home. That helped a lot when he developed cedar asthma & couldn't work any longer. He knew he could find plenty to do around the house & with his old cars.

Yeah- I'm tryingt o find that upside too- there's no way he's going to
relax though, not until he has a job.  It's been almost a year.  Ugh!
