Don't think it is water. This Redbud is slightly raised, has good drainage, and we've had other years with much more water than this. This redbud is very exposed to sun and wind rather than living as an understory tree as it was meant to be. My other, more-protected redbuds are leafing out now having given only a faint spring showing of buds since, I would guess, most were damaged by the horrible April weather. My dogwoods are in bloom now, but enjoy a more protected site. I'll wait awhile to see if any new leaves appear, but I doubt it - it is naked. This was the strongest of 3 redbuds I had planted on the south side of my house. The back one went within a year - voles or something kept eating its roots. The front one succumbed at about year 5 after being hit by lightning - as near as I could guess for a reason. That left this middle one that had always been so healthy. But if it is kaput, it's not such a bad thing. I could use the sun space again.

Your place looks great Kitty - love the babies too. I love VA bluebells butthey croak from the heat here, so I settle for Blue Daze. My redbud is 11 years old now and has survived this 2 year + drought. Could they sufferfrom too much water I'm wondering? Can't think of what might have happenedto it otherwise. Iwas on one of Chris's other Lists for a while - Mediterranean plants - andpeople kept talking about them so I looked them up and thought they were wonderful. Then I saw an Echium listed hardy to Zone 5 in the Seneca Hill catalogue and ordered it for one of our Display Gardens, but I don't know how it fared. Then I saw this one offered by Green Mtn Transplants in Maine. One said E russicum, the other, E rubrum, but I've since figured out they are the same plant. GMT and Seneca both said it was a perennial. Other sources say biennial. As in my message to Jim, the zone listings areall over the place. But after digging it up to overwinter in a pot twice, even though advice says it resents transplanting, then leaving it in the ground this past, harsh winter and openly exposed to a horrible April, this Echium is thriving. I will post another picture when it blooms. And I think I'll order more from GMT. The 10 yr old redbud though is a goner. Hard to understand.
