Re: Spicebush

The larva of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly feeds on the leaves of this shrub. I never thought there was a human use for it.

Here's what I found in Deno:
L. benzoin seed is enclosed in ared berry and requires (washed in water and cleaned daily for a week). Germination is best at a cycle (3 months at each temperature) 70 degrees (about 7%), then 40 degrees then 70% again (21% in 1 to 6 weeks in this final 3 month period). Dry storage of 6 months at either temperature or outdoor treatment are all fatal. The low germination is mainly due to the high percentage of seeds that are internally infected and rot in 1-3 weeks in moisture.

Lindera benzoin is the one I am talking about. The berries can be used in
place of allspice and it is a native here I believe.
