I read the lavender hint in the paper the other day, assumed I was the last to know.
I checked online and only found this in a few forums, which I don't really trust if I don't know the people. One bonafide sort of site did a Q&A on it and the professional annswered from a logical viewpoint rather than from experience. She said it would seem that putting any plant material in water would hasten the pollution of the water.
However, on one forum, the writer wrote that it helps and quoted a book on it. She wrote: "From 1,029 birding secrets book, to stop algae from growing- bunch 6-8 stems of lavender flowers w/ a daylily leaf, replace every 2-3 weeks, put bundle on water."
I suppose it's worth a try if you have the material. If you do, let me know if you detect a difference.

Lavender helps? Tell more. I have one birdbath in sun and one it shade- they both get gunky at about the same rate here. I clean mine pretty regularly with a toilet brush (one bought just for cleaning the bird bath). I only use water or maybe a little Simple Green to clean mine. Theresa Kitty wrote:Does a birdbath develop gunk faster in sun or shade? I know lavender helps forstall it but I don't have any. I'm cleaning the bowl with chlorine now and would like to keep it clean as long as possible. I can put it in sun or shade, doesn't matter. Any suggestions?
