Re: was Cyclamen / now Master Gardeners

Gene,
I have been enjoying this course thoroughly. We've been introduced to
numerous specialists, toured several related businesses and private
gardens, and received a ton of material. I mentioned that we are already
exchanging plants. In addition, we are trying to get a local list serve
going. I suggested it based on the enjoyment and information I have
obtained from this one. I have found several classmates who not only enjoy
gardening but also enjoy many of my other hobbies so we've been exchanging
book titles as well as gardening tidbits.

I agree that the volunteer hours aren't a hardship...we are required to
have just 32. I've already signed up to do some work in the UT Trial
Gardens and may also volunteer soon to work with Ijams Nature Center. The
center sponsors numerous education program for children and their families
as well as maintaining gardens and trails of native plants. I would love
to learn to do the soil tests but all such tests are done in Nashville.

Until yesterday, we had warm weather with clear blue skies (I know, those
in the West seem them all the time but we usually have some clouds so clear
blue skies are a novelty). Heavy rain took down most of the fall leaves
and a cold front is moving in. We still have not had our first frost. I
am about ready for winter; I want plants to slow down so I can start
working on structure and more beds.
