Ceres - You lost English lavenders? They should be hardy there. The variegated varieties don't seem to be as hardy however.
Cathy - basil likes hot weather and sun. Was your summer on the cool
side?? Try the Genovese basil. It seems the most vigorous. That's the
basil most people use for pesto. Gets bigger than the other varieties I
plant too. The purple ones for color and the holy basil for potpourri do
well, but nothing performs like the Genovese!! I start mine from seed
indoors and plant them out when I put out my peppers (or tomatoes for
those of you who grow them). If you plant it before the soil warms up,
it won't be happy.
