We have lots of the red tailed hawks... they are beautiful!

These hawks are enormous and Sugar has the good sense to get up on the porch when they are close by. I always check and she is under cover. There were 3 out here yesterday. A medium size one and two great big ones. Don't know what kind, the bigger ones are darker in color than the medium size one.

What kind of hawks do you have, Pam? Though they are predators and as such
a danger to smaller wildlife, most of the hawks around here are gorgeous.
On the other side of that equation, with hawks around, your bunny munching
and mouse/rat populations ought to diminish dramatically. (The balance of
nature is worth a little time with hawks in the yard, but keep an eye on
Sugar if those hawks are a large variety.)

How funny that must be when Nick chases them up the tree and they are gone! Even on a tether, Sugar has managed to catch one or two of the dumber birds that wander into the driveway. But she was feral as a baby and is still a mighty hunter even though she's nine years old and a hair on the chubby side. The back yard is a cat free zone except for the occasional stray that climbs the fence. They get a dose of the water hose for their efforts since I find a pile of feathers out there once in a while. But we've had a pair of hawks in the neighborhood of late, so the birds are in hiding a good part of the day. Hope they leave soon, I miss my birdies. The mourning doves are making good use of the brush pile shelter I built for them.

Pam, my catnip is inside the fenced vegetable garden - that is the only way
I can protect vegetables from the deer. I suppose a determined cat could
get in, but I don't think they would bother. I have taken one of my indoor
cats down there a few times for a treat, and she was not able to get out.
One of my outdoor cats has followed me in a few times, but she is much
too fat to get out. We feed birds and have lots and lots of them. I can't
really declare that no bird has ever been caught by a cat of mine, but it
hasn't happened often. Nick, my stupid male goes dashing up trees
after birds and then looks puzzled when the bird is not there when he
gets there. I have had more birds die from flying into the picture window
than be caught by cats.

One nice thing about having a bird & butterfly habitat is you can tell people it's supposed to look that wild and they don't know any different! But I don't grow catnip because I don't want cats in the yard eating my birdies.
