What is a dickens? - as in cute as the dickens? I thought a little dickens 
was a mischief maker, so how do these 2 terms relate?
I've always heard that "dickens" was a euphemism for devilkins.

How about "ugly as a mud fence."  You shouldn't have any problems with that.
