I guess that's it. I've just always assumed everyone had Word or something that would read Word.

Quite possibly because it's an open format, with free readers
available for all operating systems. Elsewise people with Macs/Linux
would be fighting to open Micro$oft Word files, or all tussling
with WordPerfect. How far would I get sending Kitty an Appleworks
file ?
