It's one of the reasons I pay our bills on-line--let the bank worry about all that stuff. Most [not all, unfortunately] of our creditors accept electronic transfers from the bank, so the only thing that moves is information.

They didn't even need our signature. The fake checks didn't even have our names on them, just the bank name (misspelled, btw) and the real account number. Thankfully the bank is crediting our account for the fake ones. And we're waiting for the other shoe to drop...but I hope this will be the end of it. We have a PO box too, got it years ago for convenience when we moved, and we'll be sending pretty much everything there now. It's awful how many places are getting hit with drought. I may do whatyou're doing, just see what will live with the reduced water and go fromthere. I am giving thought to cutting back the veggie garden next year too. That hurts more to think about than the front yard - now I know what really matters to me. My husband found some outgoing bills of one of our neighbors in the bushes during one of his many walks. I encouraged the neighbor to report it,which he did. The Postal Inspector happened to be there and advised himtoalways put his outgoing bill payments in one of the official blue postalboxes or the outgoing in the Post Office to avoid ID theft. When a thief has your outgoing check, he has your account number, the bank routing number and your signature...they don't need much to set up a fake. Sosorry, I know this must have been a real pain. Hope you weren't out toomuch. Many banks have a limit on your responsibility. We are still in the middle of a terrible drought...worst one in 98 of the last 100 years. Even if we have a wet winter, the weather people are saying that it will take 10 years to recover and get back to normal because our rain fall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year rather than in one season. September did bring us some rain but not enough to help theground water...if you dig down three feet, you hit bone dry soil. Rightnow, the only thing that is helping is the TVA dam system...else, we wouldall be out of water. I'm letting most of my plants survive on their ownand hope they make it. Busy but alas, not gardening. I got one pot - one - into thegreenhouse.Saturday morning husband sat down to do bills and discovered thatearlylast month someone had stolen our outgoing mail, with paid bills init, and was busy writing checks around town using our account. So we spent hours at the bank backtracking all that stuff and more hours online trying to make sure they hadn't gotten into anything else. I stillneedto make the police report. Did you know (I didn't) that they don'tevenneed your checks? The ones that were cashed were complete fakes, they just put our account number on the bottom. And poor fakes at that, anyone who really looked at it would have seen the typos and weird lettering, but oh well. We are hoping they are small-time criminals since all the activity happened a few days after the theft and nothing in the last couple weeks. What a PITA. What gorgeous weather we are having! In the back of my mind is the little voice that says we need rain, but it's just so wonderfulnow...nowind, sun, temps in the high 70s. Beautiful. Sunday I went hiking foracouple hours and then we loaded up my horse and went out to where husband's horse is being trained and boarded. My sister met us thereandwe went for a trail ride. More dirt roads than trails, but we hadn't been out there before so at least we didn't get lost. The rabbitbrushisblooming now and we were surrounded by hundreds of acres of sunnyyellow(don't get too close, it smells atrocious). Ah you can't imagine how pretty the day was. My sycamores are dropping leaves now, so I guess it's time to start raking. And my poor rhododendron looks awful. We had the waterrationinglast week so all the sprinklers were off. Only a week of not watering, and it wasn't seriously hot, but the poor plant looks really bad. I am now feeling irresponsible for keeping this cool woodland plant here in the desert, I've always been kind of smug about having one but now I wonder - given our water problems - if I should be keeping it. Well, ifit doesn't recover now that we're watering again, problem solved. Everything else looks fine. Not much happening here. Kinda chilly when I got up--55 degrees--but that's relative, I guess. Started a bunch of cuttings of strawberry guava [Psidium cattleianum (aka P. littorale)] for a friend in India. Don't know if they'll root; apparently the cuttings can be somewhat stubborn. Interesting and odd thing about the plant: it's invasive in Hawaii's rainforest [where wild pigs spreadtheseeds] and in central Florida [where birds spread the seeds], but not here--and in fact, I can't get it to grow from seed for some reason. And my friend in India is batting zero-for-two trying to grow themfromseeds also. If you've never seen this plant, it's a nice, large, multi-stem shrub with very nice stem color and contour--somewhat like crepe myrtle but without the peeling [and suckering]. The local library has severalthathave been trimmed up as small trees, and they're quite eye-catching.
