Pam,
Yes, it seems like there more fires, but it may be just that humans have
encroached on land that used to burn regularly, but with no major potential
for loss. I remember reading about prairie fires when I was a kid. They
apparently swept through many hundreds of acres and were devastating to
those in the path, but there weren't many people in the path.
I have a biologist friend in California who's mentioned several times the
problem of fire suppression, and its eventual toll on the environment when
brush gets out of hand and interacts, after a small spark, with electric
and gas service, and goes Poof!
One thing that's very chilling to me though, is that according to a radio
report I listened to recently, British Intelligence officers found
documents indicating that Al Qaeda may be plotting, and has been training
people to set fires in Europe, Australia and the US. Apparently the plan is
to tax both civil and monetary resources. There was some flap a few years
ago that they may have been linked to some of the SoCal fires, but I think
that was discounted.

No kidding. Is it my imagination, or does it seem like there are a lot
more
wildfires than there used to be?
