Living where I do there is rarely a shortage of sunshine but I have
started to wonder if I would be susceptible to SAD. In five or six years
husband and I are going to retire and we are not planning on staying
here. I originally started looking at property in climates very similar
to this. Then one day I was online looking at a place that met about
every criteria I wanted, set in high desert country just like here, and
out of nowhere I thought "I can't look at this scenery for the rest of
my life." That was startling. I don't know if the feeling will last, but
it was kind of an "uh-oh" moment.
If I didn't want to get out of California it would be easier, but now
I'm trying to figure out a place to live where 1) we don't need a snow
shovel but 2) It isn't a million degrees all summer and 3) it's still
within a couple days drive of our family here. I started looking at the
Rogue River valley in Oregon, I read it's supposed to be as sunny as
Oregon can get, but I don't know...my little online weather gadget has
shown me clouds for the last week there. I remember spending two weeks
near St Louis in November - cold, completely overcast and drizzly. I
don't know if I could stand a whole winter like that.

Very definitely I have SAD. I guess it helps to know that I'm not the
only one who reacts this way. I have tried the lamps with minor
success. I find that hours in front of a bright computer screen has
more benefit than any of the lamps I have tried. Even so, I still hate
the short afternoons.

Do you have SAD? I know people with this and the dark really bothers
them.
We only have a couple of months before more light. :)

Bonnie, it's not "winter" that makes me depressed - it's the dark
at 4:00 in the afternoon. I don't really mind the cold weather. I
do enjoy settling in by the fire in the evening, even if hauling in the
wood makes my sciatica worse. I think a snow-covered landscape
is lovely. It's just that early dark at the time I am getting ready to
wind up the day's work and have some free time that depresses me.
And, I must admit, that with my Florida-panhandle background, I am
ready for spring to begin by the middle of February. Enough is enough.

Sorry winter makes you depressed. To me, I just want to go inside, get a

nice hot dinner and settle down to a good book or quilting, and/or watch

a good program. Maybe, I am part bear and want to hibernate.
