One more thought on the tree root. I heard a licensed arborist talk one time on how when you prune a tree the same amount of root dies so if you prune it about the same it won't matter at all.
His talked to us after the big ice storm. His point was when you have ice damage not to prune very much due to the amount of root that you will loose. The leaves are what feeds the roots and if you take some away you won't be feeding those roots either.

That's what I was going to say, but didn't get around to it last night. The tree looks pretty healthy and substantial. Pruning a root on one side won't hurt it.
