That's what happened to the bananas we had in the Keys. I don't know what the big ones were, but they were pretty tastless. They weren't plantains as I had hoped. The tiny 'Cuban' bananas were, however, delicious.

Don't know if this is always the case, but it's been my experience. The plant will put out an offset. When the offset reaches a certain size, the plant will flower and fruit. Once it flowers and fruits, it dies. I don't know what happens if the offsets are separated from the mother plant when they are young--that is, if a certain degree of maturity in a still-attached offset signals to the mother plant to bloom [matricide?]. I think something like that probably occurs; all of ours that have bloomed have also had intact offsets that were full grown or nearly so.

This is the third variety we've had fruit--others were dwarf cavendish
and Cuban red.
I have a DC which I have had 4-5 yrs. I bring it in ea winter and keep as a
growing green plant. I have read of how to let them go dormant but have not
tried this. The mother plant has had babies & I now have 4 & tossed 3
(babies of the babies) this fall as I moved them indoors.
What do you mean, Jim, by 'full-size offset' and 'time to die'?
They have never produced fruit.
