Pumpkin picking and washing was such fun. This was the perfect beautiful fall day for it, too. There were six Master Gardeners, including me, and we walked through the pumpkin patch and gathered up all the pumpkins that had already been picked and set next to the road. We then washed them in bleach water and sorted them as to variety. It took about two hours to do our part of the job. Others had picked an equal amount last week, and there are more to be gotten later this week. I guess we picked about 30 different varieties today. Some were huge and others were very tiny. Jason Reeves, our ornamental hort., said we didn't have nearly the amount we had last year because of our horrible drought. The display will still be impressive, I'm sure.

As to the hydrangeas, I've always just let the water in the vase dry up along with the flowers. They have turned out all right every time.zem----- Original Message ----- From: "Jesse Bell" <silverhawk@flash.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Monday, October 01, 2007 10:55 AM Subject: Re: [CHAT] drying hydrangeasCONGRATULATIONS!!! WOO. That is so awesome. Nice photo of your garden. As for hydrangeas - I have the silica gel that I dry those kind of flowers in. You put them upside down in a can and cover with the gel crystals and they dry in about a week, and the color remains pretty good that way.Patricia <pdickson@sbcglobal.net> wrote:How do you dry hydrangeas? I have dried them in a cool dark room in 1 inch of water but I can't remember if that is all I had to do. Does anyone haveany experience they would share? I also wanted to share that my garden is on the cover of the OklahomaGardening Magazine this month, October. The article is 5 Steps to a QuickLandscape. The website is www.okgardener.comI just asked if they could e-mail me a copy that I can share with my family. The pictures were taken in July so not as good as I would have liked but wedid have more rain this July than usual.
