That's a possibility, Marge mentioned similar. I could place such a stucture in the new area. These bulbs are all very hardy, so even if it is colder there than near the house they should do ok. I guess I'm off to HD for hardware cloth. Thanks.

My initial thought was a kind of cold frame enclosure, but with hardware cloth rather than glass. And also sitting on top of hardware cloth to keep critters from burrowing in from below. That would allow snow/cold in the enclosure and preclude unnatural temperatures. On Oct 19, 2007, at 8:02 PM, Kitty wrote:Most of it is back in that new area; I made it into a sort of nursery. Set up a temporary water line there - Rather than drag the hose to it, it has it's own. However, I've always huddled the pots against the house for the residual warmth through the winter. Also, the new area is very slightly downhill, in some shade and against the fence. Does cool air sort of pool in such an area? I have also overwintered some pots away from the house, but only the hardiest stuff like peonies. I don't really worry about the plants. I usually only lose a few plants each year - usually stuff in smaller containers. I'm just hoping to make the best choice for the bulbs.Kitty neIN, Zone 5----- Original Message ----- From: "james singer" <islandjim1@verizon.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Friday, October 19, 2007 1:07 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] bulb potsGood grief; that's a lot of stuff to keep track of and worry about. I think you need to built some sort of serious over-wintering structure along your new back fence. On Oct 19, 2007, at 8:29 AM, Kitty wrote:I have a lot of bulbs I want to pot and overwinter for my sale next April. Most years that I've potted bulbs I've had no trouble with rodents. However, one year they went through every lily bulb. It happened the one and only year i wintered them in front of the house rather than the back. I have too many to cage, so I'm considering 2 options, both of which have a moisture drawback 1. in the Florida room which has same temp as outside at night but heats up from the sun during the day and faces southwest.2. under the house which I'm not sure would get cold enoughIn both cases the pots would not get the moisture from winter rain and snow that would be normal. Do you think I should just go ahead and store them outside with the 450 pots of perennials I have to overwinter? Narcissi, Allium, Ipheion, Lilium, Fritillaria. Thanks for any suggestions.
