I have inspected all the blood meal we carry, and it all states clearly that it a pork product. The bone meal states the same. I made it a point to look that up because I saw the same report you mentioned. However, we must be the only people who saw it because my customers had never heard a word of it. :o)

Not to be an alarmist, I have been avoiding blood meal ever since mad cow disease became a problem. Several scientists who have been involved inidentifying the disease mentioned that they stopped using the stuff decadesago because you can breathe in the prions if they are present.[Original Message] From: Kitty <kmrsy@comcast.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Date: 10/25/2007 7:13:31 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] bulb pots Cathy, I don't think bloodmeal is a good idea. If anything, I think alayerof grit would be good. It might help prevent crown rot while being a deterrent to rodents. My soil mix drains well and my pots have plenty of holes for drainage.Withno winter moisture they could dry out. I might give them a lightcoveringof shredded leaves when it gets to freezing, but I'll wait a bit longer, maybe Tgvg for full coverage w leaves, but no tarps. Timing depends on weather. I uncover usually in late March then in early April pull thepotsout into the sun so the soil and roots will warm and wake up. If you are concerned about rodents, you can place bait stationsinterspersedamong the pots. If you use a tarp, try to use a very light or white one. If dark, be sure to cover it with leaves. I'm more organized this year because I didn't have to do a MG bulb sale. But there is still a lot to do. The leaves are just beginning to fallandif the weather cooperates I'll be harvesting my neighbors' leaves and shredding them. I need huge amounts this year because I want to amendsomebeds as well as cover all these pots.
