At a previous home some of the top cabinets where deeper than usual. I
was forever hitting my head on them when working at the counter till I
used to it. 

At yet another house, there were cabinets embedded into the walls. Just
deep enough for a row of can goods on adjustable shelves, but worked
great and didn't take up any floor space.
