I got this message from a friend in India. It is so mordantly funny and reminds me so much of our own medical tradition that I had to pass it along.
The medical tradition in India seems to me to have a
philosophical bent of believing that medicine or treatment must be deeply
unattractive to be effective. A lot of loathsome stuff is consumed because
its good for your health. Some of our tonics are so disgusting that the
thought of being fed it forever is liable to make you fake being healthy.
The logic being, that if it tastes good, it can't be medicinal. I remember
quinine being given to me in liquid form as a kid when I got malaria.
Nothing more disgusting has ever been invented. I was sure that the doc
thought it was more effective in liquid form rather than the easy way of
swallowing a tablet. ;-)
