RE: troughs
I agree, it's a great plant. Such an emphatic statement in the
landscape, a foliage lovers' delight. In my area it is just completely
reliable - grows in pure clay (I'd never put it in good soil or it would
take over), I never have to water it, insects don't seem to find it at
all appetizing. It just does its' thing all summer until a heavy frost
finally takes it out. As they say "a good doer".

They won't grow here, which is a good thing--I'd probably have a yard
full if they did. We had a stand of them when I was a kid in SoCal.
Yeah, a bit invasive; they sucker around. But the good things about
them are, one, the leaves have hollow stems that make great peashooters
for privet berries, and two, the fuzz on the leaf stems is great
itching powder.
