Re: Root Beer

I had an Chinese Tallow Tree in my front yard when I moved in here. It is undoubtedly #1 in my most hated plants list. I am still (5 years after the tree was removed) yanking up stupid tree seedings. It is extremely invasive here- I swear every seed grows and the birds love the seeds also, so they of course help plant them everywhere. It may have nice color in fall, but the tree is a nightmare.

Sassafrass grows in the woods here. I don't actively cultivate it, but
there are several on the edge of the property. It colors up nicely in the fall and the logs are fragrant to burn. The latest book from Brooklyn
Botanic Garden, which arrived yesterday, is "Native Alternative to Invasive
Plants." This recommends sassafras as an alternative to Sapium serbiferum or Chinese Tallow Tree, which is something I never heard of
before, so it must not be invasive in these parts.

We were just talking about root beer, and today Megan, the postalperson, delivers the September/October AG with sassafras foliage all over the cover. Anyone grow this pretty little tree?
