Yes but. His address book likely has you as 'Jim Singer' as opposed to
'Island Jim' or 'James Singer'. Not being a spammer by trade, I can only
suppose that 'personal names' such as 'Jim Singer' and email addresses such as
gardenchat@hort.net or islandjim1@verizon.net can be mixed and matched
however the spammer chooses. A spammer in this context may well be an
innocent victim's compromised machine, set up to mail spam.
The strangest part about this episode is that the body of the mail wasn't
what we would ordinarily consider spam, and that the headers do in fact show that
the mail come *from* Gilbert's machine, not David's. It may be that the 'Disarmed' buisiness means that a virus or worm accompanied the mail from Gilbert
appended to a harmless message, and that it was removed by Gilbert's ISP's
mail server.

I can't figure out what {Disarmed} means; the full headers seem to show it came
into one of the Mallorn machines with that already in the Subject. I'll go
out on a small limb and suggest that either David's or Gilbert's machines
has been compromised. Both the gardenchat address and 'Jim' are likely to
be in David's address book (Jim, do you and David often exchange private
mail ?), as well as that of Gilbert, come to think of it. That sort of points
to David, at first blush. As to X stealing Y's address to send mail to Z,
that makes my head hurt...

the same thing. There doesn't seem to be a good defense against someone
using a person's (groups') e-mail address to send things to others. (We got
a delivery failure on something we never sent, or we wouldn't even know
about it.)

Strange, isn't it. If not a member, wonder how they got access to the
list?... Chris?
