One of the most entertaining trips of my life, Auralie, was the train from Denver to SLC. Maybe the fourth or fifth was the car-train from WDC to Orlando. You see stuff you'd never see any other way. If you fly, you need to learn how to say "Moo" because they're all cattle cars these days.

Auralie, Can't you board Sandy at the vet's while you're gone? RE > long hikes through airportsyou can get skycaps to drive you on a golfcart to your gate. I gather it's not the expense that bothers you but the lack of choice. I spent 3 days on the train many years ago without the luxury of "a reservation in one of the larger rooms". It wasn't the best way to travel but it was quite entertaining. If time weren't a factor, and I could sleep in a berth rather than a seat, I would like it better than flying. Give it a chance; you might be pleasantly surprised.Kitty neIN, Zone 5 ----- Original Message ----- From: <Aplfgcnys@aol.com> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Monday, September 29, 2008 4:37 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] Sad cat newsThanks so much for all your support and prayers. The issue is not yet resolved. Today the vet was surprised at how much better Sandy seemed, so she recommended putting off a final decision. The problem is that we are leaving on Thursday for ten days, and don't want to burden the persons who will be feeding the cats, and also don't want to leave Sandy untended if she is likely to go into a decline. Today she seems like her old self, butthe vet says that may end at any time. Some time ago there was a discussion here of train travel. I didn't pay too much attention since I had no experience to share nor any plans for suchtravel. However, since we have given up our usual semiannual trips toChincoteague, Chet has decided that we shoud visit our youngest son in Colorado. Flying is such a hassle, and he is just not up to the long hikes through airports, so he and #3 son decided we should go by train. This is a major undertaking - involves a layover in Chicago and two nights on the train. We have a reservation in one of the larger rooms, and they promise "red hat" service to handle our baggage, etc. It would have been less expensive to fly. Anyway, Chet is quite excited at the prospect. I dread it, but have no choice. I have laid in a stock of mysteries to keep me going. At least the visit should be fun. We are promised that our youngestgranddaughter will play in a soccer game - three-year-old soccer has to be the most absure idea I have heard of in a long time. This three- year-old isalready competitive - dominates her six-year-old brother completely. It seems that the Logan girls are the jocks in the family. My older grand-daughter, now out of college, has had a go at competitive swimming, all sorts of horsey sports including barrel racing, and crew at college. Theboys, unfortunately, have not been outstanding in any positive way.All that doesn't make our cat problem any easier, but I am trying to take itday to day and see what happens. Sandy, our elderly, obese, arthritic, butbelovedcat wasn't feeling well yesterday, and threw up repeatedly. We took herinfor tests. Today she seemed much improved, but the vet says the testsshow almost complete kidney failure, and that her improvement was theresult of fluids they injected at the hospital yesterday. It looks as ifthe treatment could be difficult, painful and complicated, and not at all guaranteed to work. So I guess it's time to let her go. I don't want to subject her to a lot of misery if it ultimately won't help. We're going to be away in another week, too, which would complicate matters. It makes me really sad, but I knowI'drather be put to sleep quietly than go through all sorts of treatments,so I feel that's the best thing for her. Just one more thing in this depressing summer.
