Thanks for the offer, but we really do have to use what's available in the store. You suggestion did remind me that the spring blooming bulbs have just arrived in the store. I think I'll be using some of them. :o)

What about iris...they are hardy and available. I could send you a box. And, those day lilies that bloom in the fall. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Zemuly Sanders" <zemuly@comcast.net>To: gardenchat@hort.net Sent: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 6:11:43 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [CHAT] summer? Again, I have to use what I've got. Thankfully, we do have daylilies. I'm also using butterfly bushes. Since it's a school they want flowers. I'm thinking less is more. They already have some good looking ornamental grasses which I'll be able to use. zem----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Evans" <gardenqueen@gmail.com>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Wednesday, September 02, 2009 4:44 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] summer?Salvia greggii's are pretty tough too Zem. They are the one plant I can count on to survive a multiyear drought or a month w/ 30 + inches of rain (which is what we normally get in a year). The salvias and daylilies came through it all virtually unscathed. On 9/2/09, Zemuly Sanders <zemuly@comcast.net> wrote:Thanks, Jim. Sounds like a fun project. I'd probably rely on lots of sandankwaviburnums [V. suspensum]; don't especially like them, but they are indestructible. The Home Depot and American Express are updating and landscaping a new charter school in Memphis. I'm in charge of determining what kinds of plants will be hardy (read "impossible to kill") and how many I'll need for several different beds. I also have to supervise their planting. This should be an interesting experience. <LOL> It's an all volunteer project for both companies. zem zone 7 West TN ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kitty" <kmrsy@comcast.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Sunday, August 30, 2009 10:27 AM Subject: Re: [CHAT] summer? My colchicum started coming up early, possibly fooled into thinkingit is fall with cool temps and lots of rain. But I love this weather, much easier to work in. Made $1000 at my plant sale this weekend. Now that most of my pots have been cleared out I can start working on late summer garden chores. Lots of tomatoes, yum. Summer may be all but over here. So far we've had maybe a dozen dayswith highs above the mid-90s. But yesterday we had a good soaking rain for a few hours. I'm told that's usually a sign that summer's nearly over and the monsoon season is approaching. After the coolest July on record, we finally had a few warmish days, but mostly overcast and humid. Then early this week a couple of days up in the 80s. 90 degrees was predicted but never happened here. Now we are back into what looks like real fall weather. It hasn't been above 72 since Thursday - wasn't out of the 60s yesterday and doesn't look like it will be today. It's drizzling rain, but less than an inch has fallen - just dismal and depressing. Add to that, the dogwood trees are definitely turning color, and the flock of goldfinches that cluster around our feeder are losing their bright yellow color. We get so much pleasure from the goldfinches. There have been more of them than usual this summer. Sometimes there are as many as eight lined up or fussing with each other for a turn at the feeder. I know they will still be here all winter, but I hate to see them lose their brilliant summer plumage.
