So, I ended up getting the ornamental plum. Found a very nice one in a
5gallon pot for 30 bucks.   Not exciting but seems sturdy so hope it can be
happy in that less than ideal spot.   I do want to look for the Peruvian
apple cactus Jim mentioned. Thinking maybe in a big pot next to the house to
try and overwinter it....  thanks all for your brains and love of plants,
