Re: Feline Pine
In the extreme the concern is for toxoplasma, a parsite that can be present in cat feces, and presents a potential health
hazard, especially to developing fetuses.

Composting studies show that a pile that heats up will decompose most pathogens in a couple months. To manage a pile to reducd
pathogens you need to turn it so that the outside of the pile is cycled on the inside of the pile. A pile that sits for a
long time will also decompose pathogens. The pathogens serve as food for decomposers.
Most home gardeners dont manage compost piles well to minimize pathogens. So most writers will advise not to include anything
in a compost pile that would lead to health risks. Often it is a cya thing. In USA there is a strong fecal contamination
phobia, in contrast to China where human feces are commonly used to fertilize crops. Yeh, in China they dont eat much raw
vegies.
The compost pile would be the best place, biologically, to recycle the nutrients from the feces, colonize the clay with
microbes and decrease the pathogens to a safe level.
It seems to come down biology and sustainability vs public health sensibilities and phobias.
